The Quiet Departure

Building the Life You Were Promised — Without Blowing Up the One You’ve Built

Sixteen chapters. Every system, every worked pathway, every failure mode, in the order they actually connect. Not an overview of the category — the complete mechanical guide, withholding one thing and telling you exactly what it is.

I — The problem this book addresses

The mistakes in this work are made years before anyone notices them.

Almost everyone approaching a second jurisdiction believes the thing standing between them and a decision is information. Which country. Which visa. What it costs. So they read, and they accumulate, and the pile of information gets larger while the decision gets no closer.

The information was never the obstacle. What actually stops people is the fear of an irreversible mistake — a decision made in the wrong order that arrives, eighteen months later, as a tax position nobody can unwind, a residency clock that started at the wrong moment, or a filing obligation in two countries that could have been avoided entirely by doing the same steps in a different sequence.

The people who do this badly almost always made the same category of mistake. They did the right things in the wrong order.

That failure is not a knowledge problem, which is why more reading does not fix it. It is a sequencing problem. And sequencing is the one thing the entire advisory stack — immigration counsel, CPA, wealth advisor — is not structured to own, because each is responsible for their own domain and none is responsible for the interactions between the three.

This book is that missing layer, written down.

II — What makes this different

This book withholds exactly one thing.

Most books in this category are brochures with page numbers. They describe the category, gesture at the possibilities, and route you to a consultation for anything that would actually be useful. The withholding is the business model.

This one is built the opposite way. Six load-bearing systems — the right to be somewhere, the country that taxes you wherever you go, moving capital across borders, the assets that will not travel, the cost of detaching, and the people who cannot be sequenced like documents — each rendered in full, with worked pathways end to end. The D7 from consular appointment to the five-year line. FBAR thresholds and the PFIC trap your foreign bank will never mention. State clawback. The covered-expatriate exit tax. All of it is on the page, in the order it actually connects.

The one thing it cannot give you is the read of your specific life: which of these pathways your income, your assets, your family structure and your timeline actually support. That requires someone looking at your situation. Everything else, you can do from the book.

If you finish this book and execute it yourself without ever speaking to us, it did its job.

III — What’s inside

Four acts. Sixteen chapters. Every system, and the order they connect in.

Act One

Seeing the Real Problem

The reframe. You believe you are stuck for lack of information. You are not, and the belief is seductive precisely because researching feels like progress while being paralysis in disguise.

Chapters
  • 01You Are Not Crazy
  • 02It's Not the Forms
  • 03The Anatomy of the Decision
Act Two

The Machine, System by System

The encyclopedic core. Five load-bearing systems, each rendered in full with worked pathways: the real order of operations and the precise joint where each one leaks.

Chapters
  • 04Where You're Allowed to Be — The Status System
  • 05The Country That Follows You — The Tax System
  • 06Getting Your Money to Follow — The Capital System
  • 07The Things That Don't Travel — The Anchored-Asset System
  • 08The Exit Cost — What It Takes to Leave Cleanly
Act Three

How It Actually Behaves

Where the five systems become one machine. The same move that is harmless in March is catastrophic in June, and reversibility turns out to be a property of timing rather than of the step.

Chapters
  • 09Order Is the Whole Game
  • 10The Doors That Only Open One Way
  • 11The People Who Aren't Components
  • 12Where It All Breaks — A Catalog of Wreckage
Act Four

What This Demands of You

The posture that survives contact, the unglamorous middle nobody photographs, and the one condition under which capable people reliably destroy their own plans.

Chapters
  • 13A Foothold, Not All-In
  • 14No Sunshine — What It's Actually Like
  • 15When Fear Takes the Wheel
  • 16You Know How Flight Works
IV — Who wrote it

Bryan Del Monte

Bryan runs Quiet Departure, a private advisory that establishes second residency for Americans — sequenced, executed, delivered. The method in this book is the method the practice runs on; the case material comes from engagements, with identifying detail changed.

The analytical posture behind it came out of defense, intelligence and policy work: environments where an irreversible decision made in the wrong order was not survivable. Assess the system. Identify the interaction effects. Sequence the response.

Defense

Senior policy roles at the U.S. Department of Defense.

Intelligence

Presidential appointment in national security policy, and private-sector consulting supporting the Intelligence Community.

Congress

Congressional testimony and briefings on national security policy.

Alliance

U.S. diplomatic representation at the United Nations, OSCE and NATO.

V — The editions

Reserve a copy.

The presale closes 30 November 2026 because the manuscript goes to the editor in December. After that the book is available on ordinary terms, at ordinary prices, on an ordinary schedule.

The manuscript is written. It is now in developmental editing, and what you are funding is its completion to professional standard — editing, production and printing. Sorvantis Press is an independent imprint, so there is no publisher underwriting that work. This is not a subscription incentive or a lead magnet dressed as a book. It is a real book with a real argument, and it is being finished as one.

The dates below are commitments rather than targets. Sales are final — you are funding completion, not reserving stock. Completing a purchase accepts the presale terms.

VI — Before you decide

The questions worth answering first.

Why buy it now rather than at publication?

Two reasons, neither of them a discount. You read the finished text well before general publication, and the presale is what pays for professional editing and production rather than my doing both myself. If neither matters to you, wait.

Is this a lead magnet for the advisory?

No. It contains the method, not a description of it. The advisory exists for people who want the read of their own situation applied by someone who has done it repeatedly. If you would rather do that work yourself, the book is built to let you.

I've already lived abroad. Is there anything here for me?

Prior experience abroad is not the same as having sequenced a permanent jurisdictional position with US tax obligations attached. Most people who have lived overseas did it on an employer's compliance apparatus. This is the part that was handled for you.

My destination isn't Italy, Mexico, or Portugal.

Those appear as worked examples because they are the ones with knowable failure modes. The sequencing framework is country-agnostic by construction: a method for reading any jurisdiction, not a guide to three of them.

What happens if the dates move?

You will be told in writing, with a revised date and when the book will publish. You are funding the completion of the book, and sales are final. The dates above are set where the manuscript's current stage says we can keep them, not where we hope to land.

Is it legal, tax, or financial advice?

It is not, and it says so in the front matter. It is a method for sequencing decisions and for knowing which questions to put to licensed professionals in each jurisdiction, and in what order.

You know how flight works.

By the last chapter you have every pipe, every fitting and every worked pathway — nothing held back about how the job is done. Which is what proves the information was never the scarce thing. Understanding how flight works is not the same as building the airplane that carries your family. The one thing the book cannot contain is the read of your specific life, because it does not exist until someone looks at your situation. That is what the Departure Briefing is — and the book will tell you plainly whether you need one.
