An older couple sharing a glass of wine by the sea

The Departure File · From Quiet Departure

Is this actually possible for us?

You have been asking it for a year. In about forty minutes, without a single phone call, you can stop asking and start knowing.

Ten business days later it is on paper, in your name: what going would cost you, what staying would cost you, which countries fit, and what to do first.

Sound familiar?

You have done the research. You still don’t have an answer.

Forty browser tabs. A YouTube channel run by someone selling a residency program. A Facebook group where the loudest voice moved in 2019. A spreadsheet started at midnight and abandoned at 1 a.m. A spouse who is half in.

Underneath all of it is one question: does this work for us, on our money, with our family, and what would it take? The people who can answer it bill by the hour, and the first call feels like raising your hand in public. So the question stays open. Another season goes by, and nothing moves.

The Departure File answers it. Privately, on your own numbers, in your own name.

What changes

What you have when your file arrives.

You stop wondering.

What going would cost you and what staying would cost you, side by side, on your own numbers. Most people never see those two figures next to each other. Once you do, the question stops going around in circles.

You're both looking at the same picture.

Something concrete to put on the kitchen table. The conversation stops being two people's worries and becomes one set of numbers you can both point at.

You know where to look, and where to stop.

Two or three countries that fit what you told us, with the published requirements set against your numbers. You can close the other thirty-eight tabs.

You see the expensive mistakes before you make them.

The tax, pension, Social Security, healthcare and estate issues your situation raises, each sized and dated, before you sell anything, sign anything, or move a dollar.

Your lawyer and accountant cost you less.

You walk in with your documents in order, your numbers modeled and the right questions written down. You buy fewer of their hours, and you know which ones to buy.

You actually start.

Three things to do the night of your interview, a target date of your choosing, and a plan for the first sixty days. Momentum, instead of another year of research.

What you get

Seven pieces. Each one does a job for you.

The free readout tells you whether your situation is as complicated as it feels. The Departure File puts your own numbers to it and gets you moving. Every piece is built on what you tell us, not on a template with your name pasted in.

01

The interview

About forty minutes, online, whenever you choose. It asks about the money. It also asks about the spouse who is not sure, the parent who is getting older, the grandchildren, the health coverage, the dogs, and the job you have not quite left. It follows your answers where they lead. No call. No salesperson.

02

Tonight's three tasks

The moment you finish, you get three things to do that evening. Real ones: check the expiry dates on every passport in the house, order certified birth certificates, pull your Social Security statement. You will have started before your file arrives.

03

The Departure File

A written report on your household, about forty pages, with your name on the cover.

Page one: the tradeoffs

What going would cost you and what staying would cost you, on your numbers, side by side. The case for staying gets a fair hearing. No verdict: the choice is yours, and now you can make it.

Your countries

Two or three that fit what you told us. For each: the residency routes, the published income and asset requirements set against your numbers, and what a licensed professional has to confirm.

The issues that apply to you, sized

The tax, pension, Social Security, healthcare, and estate questions your situation raises, each one sized on your numbers: roughly what it costs, and when it has to be dealt with. Each comes with the questions to take to the right professional.

What it costs to go

One-time move costs and a first-year budget, country by country.

04

The Stay vs. Go model

A working spreadsheet, filled in with your numbers. Ten years of staying where you are, side by side with each of your countries: housing, healthcare, cost of living, one-time costs, and your cash position year by year. Every assumption is visible and yours to change. Most people have never seen their own life laid out this way.

05

The Departure Binder

The document system for the move: identity, money, property, health, legal and estate, pets, and a file for each country. A ready-made folder structure for your computer, and printable tabs and cover sheets for the binder on the counter. The tracker shows which documents to get now and which to wait on. Some countries reject paperwork that is more than a few months old, so ordering too early wastes money and ordering too late stalls the application.

06

The Workbook

A twelve-month timeline. The country comparison. The exact questions to bring to a lawyer and an accountant, so those hours cost less. And a guide for the conversation with the family member who is not there yet.

07

The first sixty days

You pick a target date. You get a thirty-day launch plan you check off as you go, eight weekly notes with one move and one thing to cross off, and a check-in at ninety days to see where you stand.

    The first sixty days begin

Your launch plan, a weekly note for eight weeks, and a check-in at ninety days.

What it replaces

Less than two hours of a professional’s time.

An hour with a fee-only financial planner runs about $300. An expat tax consultation starts around $250. Each one answers the question you bring into the room, and only that question.

It is built from the same questions Quiet Departure works through with households before a $30,000 plan, and it costs about the same as two of those professional hours. It answers the question you have not been able to bring into any room: whether to go at all. And when you do sit down with the lawyer and the accountant, you arrive with your documents in order, your numbers modeled, and the right questions written down. Those hours get shorter.

You will still need licensed professionals before you act. You will need fewer of their hours, and you will know which ones to buy.

This is for you if

  • You have been circling the question for months and want a straight look at it, on your own numbers.
  • You would rather do the homework yourselves than hire a firm to run the move.
  • One of you is in and one of you isn't sure, and you need something concrete to talk through.
  • You want to know which professionals you actually need, and what to ask them.

It is not for you if

  • You have an operating business, complex trusts, assets in several countries, or a readout that pointed you to a Situation Review. Your situation needs a person from the first conversation. Start with a Situation Review instead.
  • You have already moved. The questions are different once you are there.
  • You want someone else to carry out the move for you. This file organizes the work. It does not do the work.

What it is not

The Departure File is educational information prepared from what you tell us. It is not legal, tax, immigration, or financial advice, and buying it does not create an advisory relationship.

Every country requirement in your file is stated as published on the date shown, set against the numbers you gave us. Requirements change. Your file says plainly where a licensed lawyer or accountant in the right country has to confirm a point before you act on it. The Stay vs. Go model shows how your numbers move under the assumptions you choose. It does not calculate what you will owe.

You accept these terms at checkout.

A few weeks from now

The evening your file arrives.

You open it at the kitchen table. The two numbers you have never seen side by side are on page one: what staying costs you, and what going costs you. The countries that fit are on one page. The things that could hurt you are sized and dated, so they stop being a fog of what-ifs and become a list.

Maybe the answer is go, and you pick a date and start the plan that night. Maybe it is not yet, and you know exactly what would have to change. Either way, you stop circling.

For the first time in a long time, the two of you know where you stand.

Questions

What people ask before they reserve.

Most of them come down to one: can we work out, privately, whether this works for us? You can. Here is how, and why.

Will it tell us whether this works for us?

Will the File tell us whether moving abroad works for us?

It gives you what you need to decide that yourselves, which is the only way a decision like this holds. Your file sets what going would cost against what staying would cost, on your own numbers, across ten years. It shows which countries you clear on paper and where you fall short. It sizes the issues that could hurt you and dates when each one comes due. We don't hand you a verdict, because a verdict from someone who won't live with the consequences isn't worth much. What you get is the whole picture, laid out plainly enough that you can look at it together and know.

What if the honest answer is “not for us”?

Then the File has done its job, and it is the cheapest way you could have found out. Knowing before you sell the house, move retirement money or sign a lease abroad is worth far more than the price. And often the real answer is “not yet.” You will see exactly what would have to change: the income, the timing, a country you hadn't considered, or one issue that needs fixing first.

Why can't I work this out from the research I've already done?

Because nearly everything you have read is about someone else. Articles, videos and forums describe averages and other people's moves. The question that matters is how the pieces land on your money, your pensions, your house, your health coverage and your family, all at once. Nobody online can do that part for you. It is the part the File is built around.

Why not just ask a financial planner or a lawyer?

You will need them before you act, and the File tells you which ones and what to ask them. But each professional answers the question you bring into the room, by the hour, within their specialty. Most households don't yet know what to ask, so they pay to find out. The File gives you the whole picture first, so the professional hours you do buy are fewer and better aimed.

Is it worth the price?

Weigh it against what it replaces. A few hours with a fee-only planner or a cross-border tax adviser costs about the same and answers one narrow question. A mistake you can't undo, like selling a home in the wrong year or triggering tax on a retirement account, can cost many times that. It is refundable until you start the interview, and if we are late, you get your money back and keep the file.

Can we really do this privately?

Do I have to talk to anyone?

No. The interview is online, at your own pace, and nobody calls you. That is deliberate. Most people weighing this haven't said it out loud yet, sometimes not even to friends or family. You can work it through privately first. If you want a person later, you can ask for one.

Who sees my answers?

The people preparing and reviewing your file, and nobody else. We do not sell, share or market your information. There is no mailing list, and you won't be chased with a sales pitch.

Can my spouse and I do it together?

Yes, and we encourage it. The interview asks about both of you: the work, the pensions, the parents, the grandchildren, the one who isn't sure. Doing it together tends to surface the questions you haven't asked each other yet. The Workbook includes a guide for that conversation.

My spouse isn't sure about any of this.

Most households start that way. One person is ready to look, and the other is worried about what they'll find. The File helps because it replaces two sets of worries with one set of numbers. The case for staying gets a fair hearing, so the person who isn't sure sees those concerns taken seriously, not argued away.

The practical questions

We haven't picked a country. Is that a problem?

No. It is the most common place to start. The interview shortlists two or three countries that fit what you tell us and sets each one's published requirements against your numbers. If you already have one in mind, say so. If it is one we cover, it will be in your file.

We aren't planning to go for a few years. Is it too early?

It is the best time. Several of the expensive decisions have to be made well ahead: when to sell, how your retirement money is held, which documents to get now and which to wait on. The File dates each one, so you know what can wait and what can't.

Will you tell me whether I qualify for a visa?

No. Only the country's authorities decide that, and only a licensed lawyer there can advise you on it. Your file sets the published requirements against your numbers, shows where you clear them and where you fall short, and tells you exactly what to confirm.

How is this different from the free readout?

The readout tells you whether your situation is as complicated as it feels. The File puts your own numbers to it: the costs, the countries, the issues sized and dated, the ten-year model, and a plan to start. One tells you what kind of problem you have. The other works through yours.

How is this different from a Situation Review?

A Situation Review is a conversation with Bryan and his team about hiring Quiet Departure to plan and run your move. That work brings professional judgment: how the pieces of your situation collide, and what to do about it. The Departure File is for households doing this work themselves. It lays out your issues and your numbers, and leaves the decisions with you.

How much of our time does it take?

About forty minutes for the interview, and your answers save if you stop. Then three tasks that evening. After your file arrives, the sixty-day plan asks for one move a week.

What happens after the file arrives?

Your first sixty days begin: a launch plan, a weekly note with one move and one thing to cross off, and a check-in at ninety days. If at any point you want a person to look at your situation, you can ask. Nobody will push you to.

Why is it $495 now and $795 later?

The first 20 households are the founders run. You get the File at the founders price in exchange for being first. After November 6, or once the 20 places are gone, the price is $795, and it is not discounted below that. You can cancel for a full refund any time before you start the interview, and if for any reason we don't go ahead, you get every dollar back.
